About the Book:
Well, we are in a new book of the Bible. One down, 65 more to go. How’s everyone doing?
Let’s look at this new book: Exodus
The second book of the Pentateuch, this is about God’s people escaping Egypt. Let’s get stated, shall we?
About the Reading:
The book of Exodus begins with a review of where the ancestry sits from Jacob and Joseph and reminding us how they came to this land.
It quickly goes on to talk about the Hebrews and their fear of the Israelites who were many in the land. The Hebrews worked them hard and, the leader, instructs the midwives to kill any male children born.
When the midwives fail to do so, they are then instructed to throw all the boys in the river.
We are told about Moses’ beginning of life; how his mother hid him and protected him then set him afloat in a basket in the river. Pharaoh’s daughter found him and has, at Moses’ aunt’s suggestion, Moses’ mother nurse him.
Moses then flees from the land after killing and Egyptian. Upon his fleeing, he finds himself a wife.
Finally in today’s reading we learn of how God called Moses to his duty through a burning bush.
My Thoughts and Notes:
Moses’ story is one that I can’t imagine anyone not knowing. Maybe it’s because I was raised in a Catholic home, but I know people who have absolutely no religious background who are familiar with the story of Moses.
I have to believe that God had a hand in making sure that it was the Pharaoh’s daughter who found him in the stream; and it was awesome to see that the aunt made sure that his mother was the one chosen to nurse him.
I am sure I had read it, but I had never remembered that he had killed an Egyptian; even reading it tonight I hadn’t remembered it.
My last thoughts is this: how FREAKY would it be to be walking in the desert, see a burning bush that was not burning, and then hear your name being called from it!
I mean, seriously, I might have flipped a switch or something had it been me.
Years ago my brother once told me that he believed that God only comes to you the way He knows you can handle. He told me that he hears God’s voice as a different male voice when God speaks to him. “Those thoughts that you think are in your head, aren’t really that; it’s God talking to you.”
I remember contemplating that for a bit and realized that my brother just might be right. I would freak out if I heard a strange voice, in my head or out, and so God chooses to speak to me in my own voice.
When I have “ah-ha” moments with those thoughts, I know that it’s God talking to me and telling me which direction I should go. I can say that, with 100% certainty, when I go AGAINST what that voice tells me to do, things go completely wrong.
What did you think of today’s reading? How do you hear God’s voice? DO you hear God’s voice?
I missed reading yesterday for some reason, but I did read 2 nights worth tonight.
ReplyDeleteI love the story of Moses. How the midwives refused to kill the babies and they were blessed with their own children We can see how God was preparing Moses from the time he was born to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Being raised in Pharaoh's courts, Moses knew the ins and outs of the palace. He knew protocol and how to approach the Pharaoh. What other Hebrew could come before the King in such a manner? Next he lived in the desert. This was Moses' 'wilderness training'. He learned how to survive in the rough terrain. Did you know that Moses spent 40 year in Egypt, 40 years in Midian, and 40 years in the wilderness? Gos is so cool! No matter what God is in control and has a plan for each of us. Just think, if you are going through some rough times, God may be preparing you for great things!
What a great thought. Many times we do go through challenges that frustrate us and we want to just throw in the towel. but you're right, God is preparing us. "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." That's what comes to mind along with "life can only be lived forward, but understood backwards." Meaning that often times we don't understand why we have done certain things or been lead to certain decisions, but years later you realize, if that hadn't been so, you wouldn't be where you are now.
ReplyDeleteI was NEVER going to be preshcool teacher, I was going to teach deaf children. God had other plans and even saw to it that I was only accepted into one college that lead me into child development. Without being in child development, I would have never gone down this path and I love my job and make a huge difference in children's lives. Plus, if I hadn't been in thies field, I never would have met my husband.
Yep, God is always in control and definitely has a plan. When we follow His plan, things fall into place.
